How Much Is A Stud Dog Fee?
Stud dog fees are dependant on many factors. For example, a rare-coloured dog is bound to have a higher stud fee than a standard-colour dog.
Below is a list of factors that can affect the cost of a stud dog:
- colour
- rarity
- supply and demand
- breed
- temperament
The average cost for a stud dog is usually around £500. However, this does not account for costs of travel, whelping, artificial insemination, finding a stud dog and other factors.

The Best Time To Breed A Dog
Unfortunately, there is no universal best time to breed a dog; it often varies between breeds and is affected by extraneous variables, such as season and housing environment.
Theoretically, breeding a dog as much as ethically possible would help increase the chances of a successful litter. However, this is largely unrecommended due to the immoral nature of over-breeding a dog. Furthermore, natural matings can transfer common STIs
Before paying for a stud fee, some breeders like to initiate a refund contract with the buyer. This means you are entitled to a partial or full refund if your dog does not become pregnant.
To minimise the chances of this happening, most breeders will require you to progesterone test your dog prior to breeding.
Canine Scanning always prefers to progesterone test. It maximises the chances of a successful litter by finding the best time to breed a dog.
How Many Times Can I Breed My Dog?
With artificial insemination, you should only breed your dog twice; both matings after ovulation occurs.
Overall, your dog should only be bred according to the specifications and recommendations of your local kennel organisation, such as The Kennel Club or American Kennel Club.
In the U.K, you must become licensed if you plan to have more than 3 litters from a single female dog.
If you are a stud dog owner, and plan to stud your male, the rules are different. He is free to sire as many litters as you like, however it is important to note that overuse of a stud dog can lead to derogatory diseases, increased risk of STIs, and poor sperm quality.
